History
The Government Degree College, Srikakulam, stands as a testament to the transformative power of education in this rural region. Since its establishment, the college has been a guiding force for countless students, helping them realize their dreams and aspirations. The institution's motto, "You Grow, We Support," captures its unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering creativity and enlightenment among students and faculty alike.
Founded in 1951 as the district's first higher education institution, the college began as an Arts College, Grade II, affiliated with Madras University, offering Intermediate courses. By 1954, it had expanded into a full-fledged Government Degree College, introducing undergraduate programs and affiliating with Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. In recent years, the college has become part of the newly established Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Srikakulam, Etcherla. Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under sections 2(f) and 12(b) since 1969, the college has consistently upheld the standards of excellence required for higher education institutions.
The college’s early days were marked by humble beginnings, operating from temporary sheds until 1962, when it transitioned to permanent buildings—a significant milestone in its history. These facilities set the stage for the college’s pivotal role in delivering education, promoting community outreach, and fostering research in the remote and underdeveloped north coastal region of Andhra Pradesh.
Over the decades, the college has produced numerous distinguished alumni who have made notable contributions to society. These include Sri H.J. Dora, IPS, a member of the Central Vigilance Commission; Sri G. Yethirajula, a High Court judge; Sri Allamsetty Krishna Rao, IRAS, Accountant General; Sri R.K.R. Gonela, IAS, Commissioner of Land Revenue, Andhra Pradesh; and Sri T. Sitaram, former Minister of State Excise, Andhra Pradesh, among others.
In 1978, the college celebrated its Silver Jubilee, a landmark occasion that attracted UGC grants totaling three and a half lakhs under the Sixth Plan. These funds and additional grants from the Seventh Plan and the Director of Collegiate Education facilitated the construction of the Silver Jubilee Auditorium—a central hub for academic and cultural events.
Today, the college features a spacious main block, a newly constructed block funded by RUSA, and a library building under construction with NIRF funding. These developments, along with ongoing upgrades and the integration of modern ICT-enabled infrastructure, reflect the institution’s commitment to creating an enriched learning environment.
As the college continues to grow, it remains steadfast in its mission to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute positively to society. The journey of Government Degree College, Srikakulam, is one of resilience, progress, and an enduring dedication to the cause of education in this region.
