 DEPARTMENT PROFILE 

Establishment and Evolution:

The Department of Zoology at Government Degree College (Men), Srikakulam, was established in 1952. Initially, it offered only an intermediate course, starting with the sanctioning of an Assistant Lecturer post under G.O.Ms No:1372 Ed, dated 27-06-1952. By 1957-58, the intermediate course evolved into the Pre-University Course (PUC), and in the 1958-59 academic year, the department began offering degree classes, marking a significant expansion in its educational offerings.

Over the years, the department evolved significantly, with several key milestones marking its development:

• 1957-58  :     The intermediate course was replaced by the Pre-University Course (PUC).
• 1958-59  :     Introduction of Degree classes in Zoology.
• 1960       :     An additional Assistant Lecturer and a Demonstrator post were sanctioned.
• 1964       :     For the first time, a gazetted lecturer post was sanctioned.
• 1967       :     Another Demonstrator post was added.
• 1969-70  :     PUC was replaced by a two-year intermediate course.
• 1969       :     The department moved to a newly constructed Zoology block.
• 1974       :     A Junior Lecturer post was sanctioned.
• 1996       :     The intermediate course was bifurcated, resulting in the department having four teaching staff members.
• 1999       :     B.Sc. Bt.ZC (Biotechnology) Program was introduced with combination of Zoology
• 1999       :     B.Sc. CBMB (Microbiology) course was introduced under the Department of Zoology
  
• 2023-24  :     Introduction of B.Sc honors Zoology Major and Zoology minor programs

Notably, many former heads of the department advanced to the position of Principal, with a few exceptions who retired as lecturers.

Facilities and Infrastructure:

The Department of Zoology is well-equipped to support both teaching and research activities. The facilities include:

• Two well-equipped laboratories
• A museum showcasing various zoological spotters/specimens
• A staff room
• A reading room

Academic Programs and Language of Instruction:

The department has a tradition of providing instruction in both Telugu and English mediums. However, from the academic year 2020-21 onwards, the medium of instruction has been exclusively English, with electives in Botany, Biotechnology, and Chemistry.

In alignment with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Department of Zoology has introduced new programs from the academic year 2023-24:

• B.Sc Zoology (Honors):A single major program focused on an in-depth study of Zoology.
• Zoology Minor:Offered as part of the new curriculum structure.

Student's Progression & Placements:

In its commitment to preparing students for advanced studies and professional success, the department offers specialized coaching for the Postgraduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) during the summer. This coaching is comprehensive, covering the essential topics and skills needed to excel in the PGCET and gain admission to prestigious postgraduate programs and useful for getting employability in their future.
